Workshops
I’ve been giving workshops for over twenty years. I feel very grateful to all the festivals, schools, libraries and book fairs that invite writers and illustrators to talk about their work and give fun workshops to help people to think outside the box. Without these workshops and visits, a lot of authors and illustrators would struggle to make a living. Doing books (good books) takes time.
I’ve given a lot of workshops to adults, especially ones who don’t draw (or had heavy judgements and never managed to get back to that amazing, unconstrained place children are in when they draw). It’s incredible what we can do with just pen and paper. I often work with teachers or future-teachers. I love pedagogy. It’s all about finding a way, a door, a gate. To understand, how to just enjoy drawing. I also got fascinated by the combination of dancing and drawing; how one helps the other. It’s something to do with the left brain and the right brain. I think we need to involve the body in the school much more.
Now, I only do a few workshops a year (I spend most of my time exploring my own art). But I still find workshops very rewarding.
